The Rupal Face is the highest mountain wall on Earth at 4,600 m. Reinhold Messner soloed a new route on the Diamir Face in 1978, one of the greatest solo climbs ever. His brother Gunther died on the descent. The mountain has been the site of both triumph and tragedy throughout mountaineering history.
