The peaks are remnants of a volcanic caldera. Glaciers have lost 75% since 1900. Lewis Glacier may disappear within decades. The technical climb to Batian requires rock climbing at 5,000 m. The mountain has unique Afro-alpine vegetation including giant groundsels.
